City of Calgary lifts boating advisory

Due to improved conditions on the Bow and Elbow Rivers, and to support the economic recovery of our city on behalf of citizens, customers, communities and businesses, The City of Calgary is lifting the boating advisory issued on June 20, 2019. Citizens can resume normal activities on the rivers.

Use caution in and around Harvie Passage. Currently, the boom upstream from Harvie Passage is out of place. The City has posted signage notifying waterway users and encouraging them to use the portage on ‘river right’ to exit the water as river channels have changed in this area.

The Glenmore Reservoir will reopen for recreational use on Saturday June 29, 2019. Visit calgary.ca/sailing to keep up to date on the status of the Glenmore Reservoir.

Water safety

A lifted advisory does not remove the need for caution on the Bow and Elbow Rivers, and all other waterways.

As always, Calgarians are reminded to use caution and be prepared for anything on the water. All watercraft users should wear lifejackets to avoid a mandatory court appearance and fines. In addition to wearing life jackets, river users should avoid tying watercraft together and consuming alcohol and other intoxicants on Calgary’s waterways.

Police and Bylaw officers will be on Calgary’s rivers throughout the summer to enforce municipal bylaws and provincial statutes.

The City of Calgary encourages all water users to familiarize themselves with safety practice bylaws and safety alerts on calgary.ca/watersafety and monitor flow levels at rivers.alberta.ca.

Flood readiness

There are currently no concerns of river flooding in Calgary communities, however, flooding can occur at any time and with little warning. Calgary is most at risk of river flooding from May 15 to July 15.

Citizens can learn more about flood risks and how to prepare at calgary.ca/floodinfo, check out our new interactive flood story map, sign up for a flood readiness e-newsletter, download the Flood Readiness Guide and prepare a 72-hour emergency kit.

Pathways closures

Underpasses that were closed during the boating advisory are now open. Visit calgary.ca/pathwayclosures for information on pathway closures and detours.
